New Chair of the South Manchester Speakers Club

Dr N. Ali from the YPS has officially taken over as the Chair of the South Manchester Speakers Club (SMSC). In 2001, Richard G Aves, Colin Wild (late), Sue Tomlinson and John Gardener who were members of the Association of Speakers Clubs founded the SMSC. The first ever SMSC meeting was held on Tuesday 16 January 2001 in Altrincham, Cheshire.

Richard Aves (pictured on left) is stepping down as the Chair of SMSC after serving tirelessly for over two decades. As Richard moves on to do other things in his life, Dr Nasar Ali (Chair) and Rona Barbour (President) who have been members of the club for many years will take over and continue leading and strengthening the club and helping the members to improve on their communication skills and boosting their confidence levels.

Research shows that the number one attribute that leads people to the top of any profession is their ability to speak confidently, passionately, persuasively, and professionally, especially in public. People who communicate with impact and win others over to their ideas, and way of thinking, are generally the ones who will enjoy the best careers, rewards and relationships.

Dr Ali said that “SMSC is for anyone of the age of 20+ who wants to improve their communication skills and become more self-confident. It’s suitable for all beginners as well as for more experienced speakers”.

The SMSC meetings consist of following:

  • Prepared speeches
  • Speech evaluations
  • Impromptu speaking
  • Chairing sessions
  • Storytelling
  • Debates

For 2023, the club meetings (10 in total) will be held monthly on the last Monday of each month in the evenings between 7:30pm-9:30pm. The meetings will be held at the Cresta Court hotel (Best Western) in Altrincham (Cheshire).
