A’ level results 2020 & university admissions – a panel discussion

The Young Professionals Society organized a webinar on Saturday 15 August 2020 about the recent A’ level results announced a few days ago and about university admissions. For the first time ever, the students this year received ‘calculated’ grades since they did not sit the exams physically due to Covid-19 pandemic. It is reported at least 40 percent of all the A’ level grades in the country were ‘downgraded’ and that meant a lot of students were disappointed as they could not meet the university offers they had to study degree courses of their choice.

The purpose of the webinar was to provide advice and information to support students who have been affected by the downgrading of A level results. To do this, we had a panel of academics and experts including Professor Waqar Ahmed (Lincoln University), Dr Imran Patel (University of Leicester) and Rona Barbour (Mentor/Coach). The webinar began with an introduction by Dr Nasar Ali (chair, YPS) who also introduced the panel and then continued to conduct a panel discussion which tackled a range of questions arising during these troubled times for many of the students who have been impacted by the grade downgrading. Each panel member contributed towards answering the questions which gave the attendees more clarity about the current situation with A level results and university admissions.

Finally, the second part of the webinar was dedicated to answering questions from the attendees. There were a lot of questions and the panel did their best to answer the questions to support the students and they also gave tips about the different careers, university applications and appealing the decisions etc.
